Letter from the Publisher April 2019
With springtime in bloom here on the balmy and breezy Suncoast, now is the perfect season to head outdoors and soak in the beauty of our natural environment. This month’s issue of Natural Awakenings is all about sustainable and creative engagement in the world around us, and in these pages, I hope you’ll find the inspiration to connect with nature’s sacred bounty which we are fortunate enough to savor in our own backyard.
The feature article for this month, “Off the Grid,” probes the ecological benefits of declaring independence from the conventional sources of power and electricity in favor of the more efficient wind, solar and geothermal systems. These forms of energy are not just beneficial for the planet, they have also become more affordable and accessible to consumers. Tax credits are even offered to people who choose to install these systems in their homes or businesses.
Next, our “Green Living” article discusses the importance of native plant horticulture, both locally and globally too. Whether you are a seasoned gardener or a total novice, this column offers insight on which plants are ideal for our particular region and how those who are interested in “going native” can adopt this practice in the landscape of their own yards.
Spring is also the perfect time of year to start an outdoor workout regimen, and this month’s “Fit Body” column delves into the numerous mental, physical and emotional impacts of exercise alfresco. Here in the Sunshine State where nature trails and wildlife preserves abound, there are a number of scenic opportunities for walking or hiking as a means of fitness, mindfulness, stress relief and a just breath of fresh air.
Finally, we can’t forget about the little ones, and our “Healthy Kids” column is about seeking adventures in nature. From geocaching to stacking stones to constructing fairy houses, there are multiple creative outlets for kids to participate in outside. Not only are these activities enjoyable and hands-on, they also encourage children to disconnect from mobile devices and focus on the pristine wonders all around them.
As usual, I hope the content of this issue fills you with enlightenment as you head into this season of renewal. And in the meantime, please don’t hesitate to email [email protected] with any questions, comments or feedback you might have. Cheers to spring!
