The Endocannabinoid System: Your Body Needs Cannabis
Cannabis is a plant made of chemical compounds called cannabinoids and terpenes which are responsible for the medicinal benefits. There are over 113 cannabinoids such as delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD), which have opposing effects, and over 200 terpenes like d-limonene found in lemon oil.
Your body has a whole system dedicated to the movement of cannabinoids around the body. It’s called the endocannabinoid system. With receptors concentrated in the brain and nervous system and spanning all major organs, this system is the most important physiologic system involved in establishing and maintaining human health. This is the most important system for health maintenance, and most doctors know little about it.
The endocannabinoid system was discovered in the early 1990s by Dr. Lisa Matsuda, a molecular biologist working at the NIH. Now we know that healthy cannabinoid tone (levels and function) is required to maintain a healthy nervous system, digestive system, metabolism and immune system. Low endocannabinoid tone is associated with most major chronic illnesses in existence today.
Medicinal plants including cannabis are the best source for exogenous cannabinoids to boost cannabinoid tone and halt or reverse disease progression. The most medicinal cannabinoids and terpenes are not intoxicating at all. While the opioid crisis is killing tens of thousands of people every year, cannabis kills zero. Qualifying conditions for a Florida medical marijuana card include cancer, epilepsy, HIV, AIDs, PTSD, ALS, Parkinson’s disease, Crohn’s disease, MS and chronic nonmalignant pain.
