Using Your DNA for Precision Nutrition

Sep 03, 2019 12:15AM ● By Janet Lindsay

Can genetic variations lead to long-term health consequences? Can these be bypassed?  How could genetic information be used to help people achieve health? Sandhill Healing Center can enable patients to bypass their genetic destiny through personalized nutrition.

Methylation is a process that takes place in the body countless times each day. The term methyl refers to one carbon molecule attached to three hydrogen molecules, and this group of atoms is essential for many processes like building and repairing DNA, clearing toxins and absorbing nutrients. Individual genetic makeup helps determine how compounds and elements are methylated properly. Small genetic variations, known as Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (or SNPS), can impact the methylation pathways and contribute to health concerns.

Sandhill Healing Center now has the ability to test, translate and target SNPs in the methylation pathway, then customize a supplement regiment for our clients based on those insights. This precision nutrition is based on a person’s unique genetic makeup, and has been sought after by scientist and clinicians since the human genome was first analyzed. We can find which gene variations exist for each client and make rational, individualized supplement decisions with confidence.

There are three steps in this process: test for nutritionally relevant SNPs with saliva-based personal genome analysis kits; translate the results into nutritional recommendations that identify eight key methylation SNPs; and target with personalized nutritional support from products specifically designed to address the SNP specific need.
