What Role Do Hormones Play in Your Skin Health?

May 09, 2024 12:37PM ● By Dr. Scott Elsbree

At Luma MD Med Spa, we’re passionate about the connection between skin health and hormonal balance. Your skin acts as a protective barrier against environmental stressors, and hormones can influence its overall radiance, strength, and wellness. Here are just a few ways that hormones impact the health of your skin.

The increase in androgen hormones during puberty can lead to acne. Androgens stimulate the skin’s sebaceous glands to produce more oil, which clogs pores and often causes breakouts. At Luma, we have many treatment options to tackle this issue, including our VI Peel, BBL's Forever Clear, and a combination of Hydrafacial and Glow2 Oxygen facials.

Many women notice skin changes during their menstrual cycle. Estrogen and progesterone levels fluctuate at various stages in the cycle, which can affect skin texture, oiliness, and clarity. Some women experience breakouts just before menstruation, known as hormonal acne. Regular facials can keep the skin exfoliated and hydrated during these cyclical fluctuations in the month.

Pregnancy also causes a surge in hormones, particularly estrogen. While this hormone is vital for prenatal health, it can also activate an increase in melanin production, which can cause melasma (dark patches of skin). At Luma, we treat melasma with a pigment lifter containing tranexamic acid for three weeks, then follow up with a Halo Laser treatment.

As women enter menopause, estrogen levels decrease. Estrogen maintains skin elasticity and moisture, but a decline in this hormone will affect collagen production and cause the skin to become thinner, drier, or more prone to wrinkles. At Luma, Dr. Elsbree offers a bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) program to help combat this issue.

Stress is another common factor that can disrupt hormonal balance. Over time, the stress hormone cortisol can increase oil production, inflammation, or even exacerbate conditions like eczema and psoriasis. Relaxation techniques and regular self-care can improve skin health during stressful times. An infrared saunas is one of our favorite ways to promote detoxification, enhance circulation, increase collagen, and lower inflammation.
