Natural Awakenings Sarasota / Manatee / Charlotte

Letter From Publisher September 2024

As the calendar transitions from summer into autumn, the pace of life tends to feel hectic. From back-to-school activities to that looming holiday rush, our schedules (and stress levels) can start to reach their limits. In seasons like this, mental and emotional health becomes even more important. When we carve out the time to care for our own well-being, we cultivate the inner peace, balance, and resilience to handle whatever obstacles come our way. This issue of Natural Awakenings is all about emotional wellness, so let’s dive right in!

As always, we’ll start with this month’s feature article, “Stopping the Trauma Cycle.” Whether it’s a chronic health issue, a severe climate disaster, an unforeseen heartbreak, or any number of painful circumstances, the National Council for Behavioral Health estimates that 70 percent of adults will experience at least one traumatic event in their lifetime. But as prevalent as trauma is, the aftermath doesn’t have to permanently define us. Healing is available, and this article offers holistic mind-body techniques to help move in that direction.

Here in the U.S., September is National Yoga Awareness Month, and no emotional wellness toolkit would be complete without this ancient restorative practice. Our “Fit Body” article explores the health benefits of yoga to resolve trauma and other mental health challenges, from depression or anxiety to substance abuse. Whether you gravitate towards a high-tempo Vinyasa flow or a methodical Hatha flow, yoga is one of the most effective ways to nurture mindfulness, which can relieve worries and stressors, replacing them with a sense of calm.

There is no age restriction on cultivating habits of emotional wellness, as our “Healthy Kids” article points out. In fact, children can learn these behaviors from the adults in their lives, which creates a strong foundation for mental and emotional regulation. Children will inevitably face hardships, but when the adults they look up to model healthy self-regulation for them, they’ll develop the skills to manage their emotions no matter the circumstances. This article delves into some practical strategies to instill that valuable lesson in the next generation.

You know the drill—this is just a quick snapshot of all the enlightenment and inspiration that awaits you inside. Once again, I want to thank you for continuing on this wellness journey with our Natural Awakenings crew, and we’ll see you back here next month!
