The Balance of Healthy Aging: Q&A with Dr. Andrew Hall

Oct 31, 2024 10:00AM ● By Mary-Elizabeth Schurrer

Balance-related issues are some of the main contributing factors to injuries, mobility restrictions, and loss of independence as we age (Frontiers in Neurology). But as common—and potentially debilitating—as these vestibular conditions are, lasting relief is possible.

Enter: the Blair Upper Cervical technique. This holistic modality can help restore nervous system function, spinal alignment, and overall balance for a healthier aging process.

In this month’s Community Spotlight, I had the chance to speak with Dr. Andrew Hall who performs The Blair Upper Cervical technique here in Sarasota. Dr. Hall was kind enough to share his 20 years of expertise in the Q&A discussion below:

Natural Awakenings: Would you offer a brief summary of the Blair Upper Cervical technique for those who are unfamiliar with this modality?

Dr. Andrew Hall: The Blair Upper Cervical technique is a specialized chiropractic method that focuses on alignment of the upper cervical spine—particularly both the atlas (C1) and axis (C2) vertebrae. This technique centers on the premise that misalignments in the upper neck can affect the nervous system, leading to various health issues.

Unlike many traditional spinal adjustments, the Blair technique uses comprehensive X-rays (often called Blair X-rays) to identify misalignments that are unique to each person. Once this tool detects a misalignment, the practitioner will conduct a gentle, precise adjustment without forceful twisting or manipulation. The goal is to restore alignment and nervous system function which, in turn, can help to enhance well-being.

NA: How does this technique effectively treat vestibular conditions, while also helping to resolve the root cause of these issues?

Dr. Hall: The Blair Upper Cervical technique does not treat vestibular issues, such as vertigo or any other condition. Rather, its goal is to restore both the structural and neurological integrity of the upper cervical spine.  Here’s an explanation of how it works.

The upper cervical region—specifically the atlas (C1) and axis (C2) vertebrae—is located near the brainstem, which controls many vital functions, including balance and coordination. Misalignments in this area can irritate the brainstem or surrounding nerves, which disrupts the flow of neurological signals between the brain and body. This disruption can manifest as vestibular issues, such as chronic dizziness or vertigo.

By using precise adjustments tailored to each person, based on X-rays and other diagnostic tools, the Blair technique corrects these misalignments without forceful manipulation. This helps reduce nerve irritation, allowing the brain and inner ear (vestibular system) to communicate more effectively. When the nervous system is functioning as it should, balance and spatial orientation will improve, which reduces or eliminates vestibular symptoms.

Vestibular problems are often secondary to other underlying issues, like trauma, whiplash, or repetitive strain—any of which can cause a misalignment in the first place. The Blair Upper Cervical technique focuses on correcting these structural problems at their source, rather than just alleviating symptoms. This holistic approach aims to resolve the root cause in order to promote long-term relief and prevent recurrence.

In essence, the Blair Upper Cervical technique restores spinal alignment, enhances nervous system communication, and resolves the structural origin of dysfunction. This will increase vestibular function, often providing sustainable relief from dizziness, vertigo, and other balance-related issues without medication or surgery.

NA: How does maintaining optimal balance, stability, and alignment contribute to a healthier and more robust aging process overall?

Dr. Hall: Balance and stability help reduce the risk of falls, a major cause of injury in older adults. When your spine is in correct alignment, you’ll decrease the strain on muscles and joints, which will protect against serious accidents or injuries.

Spinal alignment also ensures that your joints are positioned correctly, which helps prevent wear and tear. This will increase mobility and lower the risk of arthritis and joint deterioration. Alignment enhances posture as well, ensuring that your muscles can function as efficiently as possible. This will reduce muscular imbalances and relieve pain or dysfunction, allowing for a more active, independent lifestyle in older age.

Alignment eases pressure on the spine and other parts of the body to improve circulation and mitigate nerve compression. This will increase cardiovascular health and maintain optimal nerve function, both of which are essential for longevity.

In addition, balance and stability and balance promote confidence in movement, reduce injury-related anxieties, and enhance mental well-being. Physical activities that focus on balance, such as yoga or tai chi, can also elevate mood states and cognitive function. All of these benefits will nurture your wellness for a vibrant and robust quality of life.

NA: What would you tell someone who is experiencing vestibular issues, but might feel hesitant or unsure about the Blair Upper Cervical technique?

Dr. Hall: It’s an absolute must to have your neck evaluated for upper cervical misalignment. The intimate relationship between the neck joints and physical balance is often overlooked in patients suffering from vestibular conditions. I find that many patients are scared of neck corrections, but this procedure does not require painful or uncomfortable twisting of the neck. The Blair Upper Cervical technique is a precise, gentle, and effective way to find relief!
