Natural Awakenings Sarasota / Manatee / Charlotte

Letter From Publisher February 2025

February marks a season to celebrate love in all its diverse forms, so what better way to usher it in than by focusing on our hearts? This time of year is known as American Heart Month, after all! The February issue of Natural Awakenings will explore the connections between optimal heart function and vibrant holistic well-being.

From the foods we nourish our bodies with, to the movement we integrate into our routines, to the relationships we surround ourselves with, each choice we make can sustain this vital organ and the love it symbolizes. So, as Valentine’s Day approaches, let’s embrace new habits and practices that lead to a healthier, stronger heart.

On that note, our feature article for the month of February is all about “The Thriving Heart.” This article looks at cardiovascular wellness through the lens of integrative medicine, which emphasizes the benefits of incremental lifestyle shifts that can have a meaningful, sustainable impact. Integrative treatment modalities focus on holistic components like wholesome nutrition, consistent exercise, natural supplements, mindfulness techniques, and stress management to cultivate a healthier heart and increase longevity.

While we’re on the topic of lifestyle shifts, this month’s “Fit Body” article will delve into the importance of gentle movement to help decrease inflammation, enhance circulation, and regulate stress, all of which optimize cardiovascular function. As you’ll see, doing a series of low-impact stretches for just a few minutes, three or three times per week, can offer tremendous heart health benefits. Exercise doesn’t always have to be intense or strenuous in order to create positive results—sometimes gentle movement is all it takes.

With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, this issue wouldn’t be complete without mentioning chocolate—as our “Conscious Eating” article points out, this indulgence can also be nutritious! When the cravings strike, reach for a square of natural dark chocolate or a scoop of raw cacao powder. Both of these treats have a high concentration of flavanols and antioxidants, which can lower blood pressure, strengthen circulation, and minimize the risk of chronic illnesses such as diabetes or cardiovascular disease. This article even features a few nutrient-rich sweet and savory chocolate recipes, perfect for relishing with your Valentine.

That’s a wrap on our February issue, which means we are already two months into 2025! I hope you’ll set aside time this month to intentionally pause and bask in the love around you, whether it’s from a relationship or from yourself. On behalf of the Natural Awakenings team, I’m sending love as well, and I look forward to seeing you back here in March!
